The Sawtelle Veterans Chapel on the VA site is built.  It is the oldest existing structure on the campus.
John Garrison, for whom the 1972 film Jeremiah Johnson starring Robert Redford is based, spends his last days at the Old Soldiers Home in Sawtelle. Garrison serves in the Mexican War and almost 30 years after his death, in 1972 a group of students from Park View Middle School in Lancaster read “Crow Killer: The Saga of Liver-Eating Johnson,” and successfully rebury him in the gateway to Yellowstone National Park.
