September 3: Two disabled Civil War veterans assist each other at the Soldiers Home. Fred Chandier lost his eyesight due to a gunshot wound. Henry Gunderman was hit by a cannon ball during the War and lost his ability to stand or walk. Chandier pushes Gunderman’s wheelchair. Gunderman is able to steer the wheelchair using a manual apparatus. Together, the two move around the VA facilities.
September 6: The town of Sawtelle enacts the most rigid prohibitionist laws to date; making it illegal for any social club to make or distribute intoxicating liquors. Those caught breaking the law are subject to a fine.
