Wilkinson, a WWI veteran and coordinator of Women's Affairs at the VA, tells the Los Angeles Times, "The garden [Woman's Cottage] gives our women the chance to get their hands into God's earth, instead of their tongues in the dirt of gossip." Stella Maude Ellis, an army nurse corps reserve, a WWI veteran and one of the original gardeners comments that “We can be in the worst of spirits and the poorest of health, but we will still insist on going outside to care for our flowers or note their progress.”
