May 12: Los Angeles Mayor Fletcher Bowron receives the first red poppy for the annual drive. Paper poppies are made and sold to support disabled veterans. The Mayor declares May 21 and May 22 Poppy Days of 1948. The tradition of wearing a red poppy in remembrance of the fallen soldiers became a practice in Europe and the United States immediately following the end of World War I. Today, Veteran of Foreign Wars often sell poppies at the local grocery store.
