Using the metaphor of “in the closet” to represent Ethel’s hidden & unrealized desires that are traditionally seen as deviant & something to not own or practice, we used the closet symbolically. Here, instead of inwardly longing for a penis (an idea long held by some psychiatrists as what women really want), Ethel longs for a plate of donuts & some peace in which to eat them. Yet, even in the closet, Ethel’s clothes hang in mute judgment of activities that may add to her slim frame.
